Shelby Farms Park is one of the largest city parks in the country, with more than 4,500 acres of lakes, trails, woods, and open fields. Best of all, it's about 10 minutes from our homes.
Get on the water
Hyde Lake sits right at the heart of the park. In the warmer months you can rent kayaks, paddleboards, and paddle boats right at the lake, so there's no need to bring your own gear.
Ride or walk the trails
The park has miles of paved and unpaved trails, from flat, easy loops for little legs to longer rides for the grown-ups. You can rent bikes inside the park, too.
Want a longer ride? The Shelby Farms Greenline is a paved trail that runs from the park all the way toward Midtown Memphis.
Let the kids run
The Woodland Discovery Playground is built into the trees, with treehouses, climbing nets, slides, and swings. Kids can easily spend an hour or two here while parents relax on a shady bench.
Say hi to the bison
Yes, really. Shelby Farms has its own small herd of bison. Look for them in their pasture as you drive or ride through the park. It's a fun surprise for kids and adults alike.
Make a day of it
Rental hours and prices change with the seasons, so check the Shelby Farms Park website before you go.
Start with a morning bike ride, spend lunchtime at the playground, then end the day out on the lake. Since the park is so close to our homes, it's easy to pop back for a nap or a swimsuit change in between.
